Daniel Granger: World Vision

I am excited to be a part of the important work being undertaken by World Vision, a Christian relief and development organization that works internationally to help people who are disadvantaged and oppressed. Supported by a budget in excess of $1 billion, World Vision is one of the largest Christian relief and development organizations in the world. World Vision was established in 1950 by Dr. Robert Pierce, a missionary who worked in China and South Korea as a member of the Youth for Christ organization. Initially, World Vision concentrated on providing assistance to children in need, including orphans. The organization began in South Korea and quickly spread throughout Asia. Today, World Vision spearheads projects in almost 100 countries on 6 continents. The organization has also broadened its focus, dividing its work into five different areas: emergency relief, education, promotion of justice, economic development, and health care. Some of the community development projects World Vision undertakes include establishing emergency feeding centers following an agricultural crisis; training farmers on the latest agricultural techniques; building improved food storage facilities; staffing health clinics and providing medical equipment, medicines, and preventive health care; drilling for new water wells and developing irrigation and water storage systems; improving sanitation; and providing community lending opportunities for entrepreneurs. World Vision continues its care for children by providing shelter and counseling during crises; protection and advocacy; child sponsorship as an alternative to forced labor; the construction and repair of schools; literacy programs; vocational training; and much more. In addition to its international development work, World Vision is also involved with eight major urban and rural areas in the United States, collaborating with churches, schools, businesses, and individuals to provide such needed items as school supplies, household goods, and clothes. In addition, World Vision and its partners in the United States offer tutoring, mentoring, and life-skills training for children and adolescents, and they provide emergency financial assistance to families following disasters.
